Ethical Cargo

Our Commitment to Africa

At Somali Cargo, we are more than just a logistics provider; we are a partner in the prosperity and well-being of the communities we serve. Our commitment to ethical cargo is driven by a deep respect for the economies, cultures, and public health of Somalia and the wider African continent.

Our "Africa First" policy is a company initiative designed to ensure that the goods we transport contribute positively to the region, rather than causing harm. We reserve the right to refuse the carriage of any item that we deem to be unethical or detrimental to local markets and communities.

Our Principles

This policy is founded on three core principles:

Supporting Local Economies

We believe in fostering self-sufficient and vibrant local markets. By restricting certain types of cargo, we help protect local industries, creating opportunities for businesses and employment.

Preserving Cultural Integrity

Our policy helps to promote the dignity and self-reliance of the communities we serve. We believe in providing access to high-quality, new goods that support local retailers and manufacturers.

Ensuring Public Health and Safety

We take a proactive stance on public health, preventing the import of items that may pose a risk to the health and safety of the population.

Prohibited Items Under Our Ethical Policy

In line with our commitment, Somali Cargo will not transport the following items:

  • Second-Hand Clothing
Often referred to as "mitumba" in parts of Africa, second-hand clothing can be detrimental to local textile industries. We aim to support the growth of domestic manufacturing and retail, fostering a sustainable economic future. We will not accept second-hand clothing for shipment.
  • Food Aid
While humanitarian aid has a place in emergency situations, its unregulated distribution can undermine local agriculture and the livelihoods of farmers. Our policy is to support the development of a self-sufficient food system by ensuring goods that can be locally sourced are not undercut by international aid.
  • Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and Products
As a precautionary measure to protect Africa's rich agricultural biodiversity and to support sustainable farming practices, we do not transport any products that contain or are derived from genetically modified organisms.
  • Vaccines
For public health and safety, Somali Cargo will not transport vaccines or other sensitive medical supplies unless they are part of a fully vetted, official, and properly regulated programme. This ensures the integrity of the medical supply chain and prevents the circulation of potentially harmful or counterfeit products.

We ask for your understanding and cooperation in adhering to this policy. Our goal is to serve as a responsible partner in the development and prosperity of Africa. If you have any questions regarding whether your cargo falls under our ethical policy, please contact us for clarification before booking your shipment.
